ROCKINGHAM — For the second time while facing Hoke County High School this season, the Richmond junior varsity girls’ basketball team won with a running clock.
The JV Lady Raiders hosted the JV Lady Bucks Friday and continued their undefeated season against Mid-South Conference opponents.
Despite having just six players available due to injuries, Richmond used a strong first half to run away with a 53-19 victory.
Holding Hoke County to single digits in scoring in three of the four quarters allowed the JV Lady Raiders to take a 35-point lead in the fourth quarter to start the running clock.
Freshman Amiyah Streeter, playing down from varsity to help alleviate the voids left by injuries, outscored the entire Hoke County team with 23 points. She scored 12 points in the first half and added 11 points in the second half.
Sophomore Erin Drumwright also had double-digits with 12 points. All six players scored in the win – sophomore Kaylee Connor and freshman Emani Ingram each had 7 points, and sophomore Alexis Mosley and freshman Lyra Newton both had 2 points.
“We only had six girls available to play tonight and all six did what they needed to in order for us to get another great win as a team,” head coach Tonia Breeden said. “Every girl was able to score and that is something I know they’re proud of accomplishing.
“Amiyah has been a big help to us scoring and on defense since we’ve lost a couple players to injury,” she added. “Kaylee and Erin also had really good games for us tonight and added that supplemental scoring we needed.”
Richmond took a 16-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Streeter scored her first eight points on two field goals, a three-pointer and a free throw.
Drumwright and Ingram each had three points, both netting a basket and adding a shot from the line. Connor scored the first two of her six first-half points.
Essentially putting the game away in the second quarter, Richmond outscored Hoke County 12-11 to take a 28-13 lead at halftime.
Combining for half the team’s points in the second were Connor and Streeter, both of whom had four points. Drumwright and Ingram scored a field goal each in the second.
The JV Lady Raiders’ highest-scoring quarter was the third, which resulted in a 17-2 run to put them ahead 45-15 at the buzzer.
Streeter took control of the offense and scored nine of her 11 second-half points. She went 4-for-5 from the line and scored one triple and one field goal.
Staying consistent, Drumwright found the basket twice more for four points. Ingram capped her scoring with a field goal and Mosley scored her two points from the floor.
Early in the fourth Richmond took a 35-point lead to speed up the clock. Ending the game on an 8-4 run, the JV Lady Raiders used three points from Drumwright, a bucket each from Streeter and Newton and a Connor free throw.
Tuesday will be the next game day for the JV Lady Raiders (10-4, 5-0 MSC) when they host Overhills High School at 5 p.m.
