ROCKINGHAM — One mistake cost the Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team Thursday.
Wrapping up their two-game regular-season series with Lee County High School, the Lady Raiders lost a close contest 1-0.
A scoreless first half by both Sandhills Athletic Conference teams was broken up within the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Richmond committed a hand ball in the box and Lee County (8-6, 5-5 SAC) capitalized on the penalty kick opportunity in the 48th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Sa’Quanna Bostic made the correct read on the PK, but her diving save attempt to her left was just out of reach of the shot.
“We played a pretty good first half that was back and forth,” head coach Chris Larsen said. “We had some chances to score on some good passes down the wings. We just couldn’t get a foot on those opportunities around the goal.
“Defensively, we also played well. The hand ball was unfortunate and it just bounced up and we got caught with our arms outstretched. It was just an unlucky penalty kick that Quanna nearly got a hand on.
“We put some nice runs on goal in the second half. Ashly Gonzalez had a couple of nice shots and Erin Drumwright almost flicked in a shot on a corner kick. Again, it was just a night where we couldn’t capitalize on those opportunities.
“We get another good opponent to start the week next week,” Larsen closed. “Sun Valley has played some common opponents and I think it will be a good matchup.”
The Lady Raiders (6-10-1, 3-7 SAC) host non-conference Sun Valley High School (9-3-2) Monday at 5:30 p.m.
