Second-half scoring lifts JV Raiders past Lee County

rSANFORD — A healthy dose of scoring from the entire lineup propelled the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team to a win Monday. 

Starting a three-game showdown at Lee County High School, the JV Raiders cruised to a 65-32 victory. 

Winning their third straight game, the JV Raiders had 10 players find the basket, including double-digits from freshman Kerick Hairston Jr. (15 points) and sophomore Josiah Brewington (12 points). 

Sophomore Elijah Peterkin scored 8 points and freshman Devin Haynes finished the game with 7 points. Four players netted five points apiece — sophomores BJ Hinson, Landon Legrand and Adrion Pore, along with freshman JaVeon Littlejohn. 

Sophomores Jaden Ratliff and Makai King chipped in two points and one point, respectively. 

Richmond controlled the tempo from the opening tip-off, and used a 16-6 run during the third quarter and an 18-5 stretch in the fourth to put distance between the JV Yellow Jackets. 

Nine points from Hairston Jr. in the first quarter led the JV Raiders, who took a 17-11 lead. Hairston Jr. made a trio of field goals and added a three-pointer. 

Brewington scored half of his point total with six points in the first, starting with two free throws before adding a pair of buckets. Peterkin was responsible for Richmond’s other two points. 

Five JV Raiders scored in the second period, a 14-10 stretch, led by Haynes. He opened with a field goal and added a shot from downtown for his first five points. 

Hinson got on the board with a triple and netting a field goal each were Peterkin, Littlejohn and Ratliff. That gave Richmond a 31-24 lead at the break. 

Hairston Jr. and Brewington both finished their scoring in the third quarter. Both had six points, including a three-ball from Hairston Jr. 

Also finishing their point totals were Hinson and Haynes, both of whom had a bucket. 

Entering the final stanza with a 47-27 lead, Richmond put the game away with its final 18 points from five players. 

Legrand and Pore both had all of their points in the fourth, each scoring five points on a free throw and two baskets. 

Peterkin scored a pair of shots for his final four points, Littlejohn splashed down a triple and King made his free throw. 

The JV Raiders (4-6, 3-2 SAC) travel to Pinecrest High School Tuesday for another conference game. That matchup will start at 6:30 p.m.

Sports editor’s note: The Richmond junior varsity girls’ basketball team (3-3, 2-2 SAC) didn’t play Monday. The JV Lady Raiders will travel to Pinecrest Tuesday and play at 5 p.m.
