Second straight loss for Hamlet Juniors to start season

LEXINGTON, N.C. — It was a tough day at the plate for the Hamlet American Legion Junior baseball team Sunday. 

A day after opening their season against Davidson County Post 8 with a loss, the Junior 49ers suffered another loss to the same team. 

Playing at Holt Moffit Field, Hamlet suffered a 10-0 loss in five innings. The Junior 49ers were also no-hit by the Junior Black Hawgs. 

Cooper Gainey started on the mound for Hamlet, going three innings. He allowed nine runs (six earned) on five hits, five walks and two strikeouts. 

Jake Veach closed the final inning, giving up an unearned run on one hit, four walks and two Ks. 

Davidson County scored three runs in the first inning, two runs in the third inning, four runs in the fourth and its final run in the fifth to end the game. 

Veach, Jake Smith and Noah Stubbs each drew a walk to reach safely. Gainey and Veach were also hit by a pitch and Wallace Herring was the only other base runner in the game (error).

The Junior 49ers (0-2) will play on the road Wednesday at Eastern Randolph Post 81. The game will be played at Eastern Randolph High School and start at 7 p.m.
