SPRING LAKE — The week of redemption started off in the right direction for the Richmond Senior High School volleyball team Tuesday.
Competing in the first of their two final regular-season matches this week, the Lady Raiders got even with Overhills High School.
Redeeming a five-set loss from a couple weeks ago, Richmond rolled to a 3-1 victory.
Setting the tempo early, the Lady Raiders cruised to a 25-8 victory in the opening stanza. That was followed by what head coach Ashleigh Larsen called the team’s “usual lull” in the second, which was an 18-25 loss.
The third and fourth sets were a battle most of the way, Larsen explained, but Richmond was able to pull away both times to close the door. Those set scores were 25-19 and 25-20, respectively.
“We won the first set pretty big, but then we didn’t perform very well in the second,” Larsen said. “The lights went out in the gym for about 10 minutes in the second, and we were back on our heels a little bit. We made a lot more errors than (Overhills) did and we let them back in it.
“The third and fourth sets were a battle back and forth. We’d go on a run, then they’d go on a run. But in the end, we were able to overcome and get both wins.
“Kaylan Parsons had a big game swinging, Carleigh Gibson did a great job all around and Madisen Jackson was a beast from start to finish and didn’t let any balls drop by covering her players,” Larsen added. “Collectively, this was a good win all around.”
Heading into a big match Thursday, Larsen wants the team to clean up its serving.
The Lady Raiders (12-7, 5-4 MSC) close their regular season Thursday with a home match against Pinecrest High School (10-12, 6-3 MSC).
Also looking to even its season series with the Lady Patriots, Richmond will recognize its three seniors — Carleigh Gibson, J’Nasia Neal and Ka’mora Watkins — on senior night. First serve is at 6:30 p.m.
