LAURINBURG — While the Raider and Lady Raider varsity teams were taking care of business against rival Scotland High School in Rockingham Friday, the junior varsity girls’ team held up its end of the deal on the road.

In varsity action, the Lady Raiders kicked things off with a 46-38 come-from-behind win thanks to a career-high 14 points from junior guard Layne Maultsby. The Raiders also impressed, edging the Fighting Scots 59-50 on senior guard Rod Newton’s game-high 17 points.

Head coach Mitch Coe’s junior varsity basketball team used a game-high 26-point performance from sophomore Shelly Hoffman to ease past the Lady Fighting Scots 74-42.

Joining her in the double-digit scoring column were sophomore Mya Bryant (14 points), twin sister Kelly Hoffman (12 points) and sophomore Davionna Campbell (11 points).

Richmond outscored Scotland in every quarter, and jumped out to a 34-16 halftime lead. The best quarter for the Lady Raiders was the second frame, as they netted 23 points. Shelly Hoffman had four of her 26 in the period, and Kelly Hoffman had a quarter-high eight points.

While her 10 first-half points were impressive, Shelly Hoffman exploded to double that tally with 10 more in the third. Her five field goals were aided by four points from sophomore Asia Douglas. Scotland netted a quarter-high 14 points in the third, but it wasn’t a match to Richmond’s 21 points.

The Lady Raiders closed out their season-high scoring performance with 19 more in the final stanza. They went 6-for-8 at the charity stripe, and Daniah McDonald drained the team’s only three-pointer of the game.

Other point totals for Richmond were six from Douglas, three from McDonald and two by Korie Dawkins.

Improving to 9-4 overall, and 4-3 against SAC opponents, the JV Lady Raiders will return to action on Friday, Jan. 25, at Purnell Swett High School.
