ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Observer sports department is continuing its Sideline Soundbites from the Gridiron series.
A new, exclusive video interview series hosted by sports editor Kyle Pillar, the video chats open the door to all of Richmond Senior High School’s sports to fans across the state.
On Wednesday, rising junior nose tackle J.D. Lampley and rising senior defensive tackle Kaleel Brown spoke about the team’s new defensive scheme and the perks of voluntary workouts beginning after a five-month hiatus due to the coronavirus.
In this edition of Sideline Soundbites from the Gridiron, Pillar will shift the focus to two rising junior players on the offensive side of the ball.
Up first is wide receiver and punt returner Kellan Hood. Standing at 5-10 and 170 pounds, Hood came onto the varsity scene as a sophomore. Normally used by offensive coordinator Brad Denson in the slot, Hood has an uncanny chemistry with the Raiders’ quarterback, his older brother and rising senior Caleb Hood.
Playing in 12 games in 2019, Kellan Hood caught 24 passes for 262 yards. He averaged 10.9 yards per reception and tallied his first varsity touchdown in a 51-7 win over Lumberton High School on Oct. 25.
He also returned 11 punts during the season, adding 119 yards to his all-purpose yards. His best return was a 56-yard burst against Pinecrest High School in the team’s second conference game of the season.
With the high school football season set to officially get started February, Hood joins Pillar to talk about his chemistry with his older brother, how vital his junior season is for college recruiting and highlights some of the positives of the rising junior class.
