CAMERON — The Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team returned to the win column Tuesday.

Ending a five-game losing streak, the JV Raiders defeated Union Pines High School 52-40 in their first Sandhills Athletic Conference game of the new year.

Outscoring the JV Vikings in the first three quarters was enough to hold off a late comeback attempt in the final stanza.

Nine total players scored in the win for Richmond, which was led by sophomore BJ Hinson (11 points) and freshman Kerick Hairston Jr. (10 points).

Adding to the win were sophomores Josiah Brewington (8 points) and Amare Bell (7 points), sophomores Jacques Jackson and Jayden Ratliff (4 points each), sophomores Landon Legrand and Adrion Pore (3 points each) and freshman Devin Haynes (2 points).

Richmond started the game with a 13-6 run in the first quarter. Hinson, Hairston and Pore all had three points in the early going, with the latter two each hitting a three-pointer.

Haynes added to the lead with a pair of free throws and Brewington got his scoring started with a field goal.

The JV Raiders’ highest-scoring quarter of the game was the second, a 20-point performance. Outdoing Union Pines by seven points, Richmond entered the half ahead 33-19.

Hinson rounded out his scoring effort with his final eight points, draining two triples and two free throws. Bell got into the scoring column with five points on a shot from beyond the arc and a bucket.

Also adding a three-pointer apiece were Brewington and Ratliff, two of the JV Raiders’ eight made three-pointers in the win. Legrand notched a free throw before the half.

Another strong run in the third quarter, this one a 14-5 stretch, built Richmond’s lead to 47-24. Hairston’s final seven points led the team, which were courtesy of a triple and two field goals.

Jackson netted all four of his points thanks to two baskets and Brewington capped the quarter with three points on a free throw and a field goal.

Union Pines went on a 16-5 run in the final eight minutes. Recording Richmond’s final five points were Bell (field goal), Legrand (two free throws) and Ratliff (free throw).
