ROCKINGHAM — Downtown has been blanketed in smoke all afternoon, but the culprit isn’t a wildfire.
According to the N.C. Forest Service, there are currently four active controlled burns throughout the county.
One is a 100-acre burn near Harrington Cemetery off Old Cheraw Highway, south of Cordova, northwest of the intersection with Osborne Road.
There are also two east of Hamlet: one in the block between Coles Store Road and Peggy Mill Road; the other near the Scotland County line in the block between Gum Swamp Lake and Cognac roads.
The fourth prescribed burn is north of Hoffman off of Tilley Street, east of Crappie Lake.
The NCFS Public Wildfire Viewer also shows a 56-acre fire in Anson County between Pit Road and the Pee Dee River.
