ROCKINGHAM — A second suspect has been charged in the financial exploitation of a Richmond County woman.

According to warrants, 51-year-old Shelia Denise Crump, of Chesterfield, South Carolina, assisted her sister in taking care of the reported victim on weekends in early 2024.

One warrant states that the reported victim is unable to walk or “do things on her own without assistance.”

Crump allegedly began coming during the week and turning the reported victim against her sister. Crump then reportedly brought in 68-year-old Sallie Jean Patterson, of Rockingham, and “began taking checks from the victim” starting March 1, 2024.

The two allegedly would leave the reported victim alone, without a bath, and would leave food out for several days at a time. They would also not clean the house, a warrant states.

Crump allegedly collected  $38,505 from the reported victim’s checks.

Warrants for Crump’s arrest were issued Jan. 26, charging her with: 58 counts of larceny of chose in action; 59 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses; 30 counts of uttering a forged instrument; and one count of exploitation of an elderly or disabled adult.

She was arrested Feb. 12 and booked into the Richmond County Jail on a combined $85,000 secured bond. However, she was released on bail the same day. Crump is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 26.

Patterson was arrested Jan. 29 and posted a $100,000 secured bond the same day.

South Carolina court records show Crump has a pending shoplifting charge in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Crump was convicted in Richmond County of felony larceny in 1991. She was subsequently convicted in 2012 of misdemeanor larceny and possessing stolen goods.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
