ROCKINGHAM — After the first week of the high school spring sports season was a wash for many of Richmond Senior’s programs, several will look to resume a regular schedule starting Monday.
Lady Raider softball looks to keep bats hot
Only getting to play one of its three scheduled games last week, the Lady Raider softball team will get three more chances to earn wins this week. Head coach Mike Way won in his debut, a 13-3 rout of Uwharrie Charter Academy last Wednesday.
First up will be Anson High School (1-0) on Monday, a road makeup game from Friday. Then the Lady Raiders will open Sandhills Athletic Conference play on Tuesday and Friday against Purnell Swett High School (1-0).
The Lady Rams are predicted to be one of the SAC’s top teams in 2020, and they’ll visit Richmond on Tuesday. The Lady Raiders will close the series on Friday in Pembroke. All three games are set for a 7 p.m. start.
Also getting their season started will be the JV Lady Raiders and head coach Jordan Fortune. The JV team will play at Anson on Monday, followed by a road game Tuesday and a home game Friday against Purnell Swett.
Raider baseball seeking first win of 2020
An 0-2 start for the Richmond baseball team last week will see first-year skipper Rob Ransom and the Raiders look to rebound with two more games this week. The Raiders also saw two games rained out Saturday against Ashley and Laney with no makeup date decided yet.
Potential rain has already impacted the Raiders’ schedule this week, with their home game against Purnell Swett moved to Monday. Richmond will travel to play the Rams (2-0) on Friday, with both games set for 7 p.m.
The JV Raiders (1-0) will travel to Purnell Swett Tuesday and play the Rams at home on Friday (both 5 p.m. starts).
Lady Raider soccer to play two crucial SAC matches
After starting the season with a win, a loss and a draw, the Richmond girls’ soccer team will face two early-season SAC tests this week. Head coach Chris Larsen and the Lady Raiders will welcome in Pinecrest High School (1-1-1, 1-0 SAC) on Tuesday, before traveling to Jack Britt High School (1-0-1, 1-0 SAC) on Thursday.
The game against the Lady Buccaneers was moved up a day due to a scheduling conflict with Jack Britt. Through three games this season, the Lady Raiders are 1-1-1 and 1-0 in SAC play, with sophomore Kaitlyn Huff leading the team with two goals.
Both matches will get underway at 7 p.m. The JV soccer team (2-0) will also play Pinecrest and Jack Britt ahead of the varsity team at 5:15 p.m.
Tennis team in action after two rain-outs last week
Third-year head coach Patrick Hope and the Raider tennis team saw both matches last week rained out, and will start their season on Monday with a makeup at Seventy-First High School.
That will be followed by two more matches, both at home, on Tuesday and Thursday. The Raiders will welcome in Purnell Swett and Pinecrest, respectively. All three matches are to begin at 4 p.m.
Track and field set to open SAC schedule Thursday
The Richmond boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will compete in their first SAC meet of the season at Scotland High School. The Raiders and Lady Raiders will go against host Scotland, Purnell Swett and Seventy-First high schools starting at 3:30 p.m.
It will be the season-opener for the boys and head coach Chris Campolieta, but it will be the second contest for the girls and head coach Reggie Miller. The Lady Raiders will also compete in an invitational at Hoke County High School on Saturday (9 a.m.).
