State youth hunter skills tournament returns to Richmond County

ELLERBE — Hundreds of students from across the state will be in Richmond County this weekend for the annual Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament.

The event, hosted by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, will be held Saturday, April 25 at the John Lentz Hunter Education Complex and Shooting Range east of Ellerbe.

According to NCWRC, competitive events include shotgun, archery, rifle, orienteering and a written hunting skills exam.

The Lentz Center has hosted the state tournament for several years, and was also one of nine sites for the district tournaments in March.

Rockingham City Manager Monty Crump, who has served on the commission since 2017, told the RO in 2022 that the tournaments bring “substantial local tourism spending and great exposure to Richmond County’s rich outdoor heritage.

“The Wildlife Commission’s Lentz Shooting Range and nearby Sandhills Game Land provide excellent destination opportunities for visitors to enjoy shooting and hunting pursuits in Richmond County."
