DOBBINS HEIGHTS — The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has charged one teenager in the death of another.
According to a press release posted to social media, deputies responded to Horseshoe Drive just after 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 after the Richmond County Emergency Communications Center began receiving calls about gunshots and a truck driving into a house.
Patrol deputies and members of Hamlet Fire and Rescue reportedly found a teenager inside the truck, “unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound.”
The reported victim was taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond where investigators say he died from his injuries.
Investigators with the RCSO Community Impact Team and Criminal Investigations Divsion reportedly identified the shooter as another teen, who was located, taken into custody and charged with one count of muder.
The sheriff’s office says the young defendant will face additional charges as the investigation continues.
The names of the victim and defendant are being withheld because they are both juveniles, according to the sheriff’s office.
The defendant is reportedly being held without bond in a “secure juvenile custody facility.”
The Rockingham and Hamlet police departments and an agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted in the investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
