The Radio bringing rockabilly back to Hamlet's Boxcar Concert Series

HAMLET — Rockabilly returns to Main Street Park this week as the Radio takes the stage for the July installment of the Boxcar Concert Series.

This will be the third consecutive year the three-piece band, with members from Randolph and Chatham counties, has performed in the series.

Last year, the set list featured original tunes and covers — including renditions of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page," Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," and "Gimme Some Money" by the fictional band The Thamesmen from the 1984 mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap."

The Boxcar Concert Series is held the fourth Friday of each month, April-October, coinciding with TGIFriday Food Trucks on Main.

The food truck lineup for this week is: Max’s Millstone Barbecue; Mama Blair’s; Everything Rolled; RayRay’s Funnel Cakes; Erica’s Cake Factory; and Puckered Up Lemonade.

Other acts scheduled for the Boxcar Concert Series this year are:

Aug. 22 - Jonathan Robinson Band

Sept. 26 - Vagabond

Oct. 24 - Erik Hawks and the Hard Luck Band

The Radio won’t be only live music in Richmond County on Friday, as Hawks is scheduled to play a solo show at Hudson Brothers Deli in Rockingham.

Hawks is an award-winning singer/songwriter now living in Fayetteville who has been performing several years in his home county as a solo act or with the full band, with shows at both Rockingham Speedway and Rockingham Dragway, as well as Rockingham’s SpringFest and the Seaboard Festival.

The free Boxcar Concert Series started on Sunday afternoons in 2022, but was switched to Friday evenings to coincide with TGIFridays on Main, with several food trucks set up near the Depot.

This season opened with Good Company in April, followed by the River Ridge Bluegrass Band in May. June’s show was canceled.
