The ROSports desk is here to help

ROCKINGHAM — If this were a “normal” spring sports day, I’d be typing away about Richmond Senior High School’s baseball or softball, tennis or golf, soccer or track and field teams.

But it’s not a normal day, as we enter week three of no high school athletics.

Even though that’s the case, that doesn’t mean sports coverage has to stop in Richmond County.

The sports desk at the Richmond Observer has slowed down for obvious reasons, but I am still working diligently to provide stories as best I can. It’s challenging me to be more creative in my approach to cover sports, and I’ve always been up for a good test.

There are some projects in the works, many of which I believe our readers will enjoy. But I’ll admit, I miss being out on the sidelines and interacting with the players, coaches and families of our community.

Because there are no sports being played anywhere across the state, I’m opening the door to our community to help tell stories.

We are in unprecedented times and I normally wouldn’t need to ask for help -- the spring sports schedule is the busiest time of year for most sports writers.

That being said, I’m here to help you Richmond County. Whether you have a sports-related story idea, or a human interest piece about all the good happening as a result of our current shelter-in-place situation, I want to help tell it.

Prior to becoming the Richmond Observer’s sports editor in Feb. 2018, I was the paper’s managing editor for seven months. I ran both the newsroom and the sports side of things. It’s been a while since I’ve covered hard news, but I promise I haven’t lost my touch.

Every time I look on social media I see people helping others in this time of need and it’s rekindling the faith of many about the power of the human spirit. Now more than ever we need to see, read and hear about the goodness in our world.

And I want to help spread those good things to our tens of thousands of readers.

If you have a story idea, or want something shared with our community, please email me at kpillar@richmondobserver.com. I’m here to help and I look forward to growing stronger with our community as we swim through these unchartered waters.
