The Two-Horned Drouberhannis
In the mid-1930s,
When Ted was real young,
He worked as an illustrator,
On ads that would run.
He enjoyed his job,
Except for one problem,
He couldn’t draw well,
And he had to draw often!
His ads featured animals,
Like lions and tigers,
He needed more practice,
Or else he’d be fired!
Luckily though,
His father worked at a zoo,
And to help Ted practice,
He knew just what to do.
When an animal died,
He grabbed the best parts,
And sent them to Ted,
So, he could practice his art.
He sent him some antlers,
Horse hooves and beaks.
Rabbit ears, duck bills,
Turtle shells and teeth.
He sent him snake fangs,
And fur from a fox.
Frog’s legs, bat wings,
Whatever fit in the box.
But Ted did much more,
Than practice drawing, it seems,
He re-assembled these parts,
And made new animal things.
The Kangaroo Bird,
And the Powerless Puffer,
The Two-Horned Drouberhannis,
Plus plenty of others.
These bizarre new creatures
From Ted’s imagination,
Would inspire his eventual,
More famous creations:
The Grinch and The Lorax,
Even Cindy Lou Who,
Thing 1 and Thing 2
No, Ted isn’t well known,
For his taxidermal spoofs,
Because Ted had a pen name
And went by Dr. Seuss.
