ROCKINGHAM — Local high school spring sports will pick back up starting Tuesday after the threat of potentially dangerous weather.
Richmond Senior High School’s spring sports teams are set for a busy week, as all six programs are scheduled to be in action for the first time.
This week will be a mixture of Richmond’s teams facing non-conference and Mid-South Conference opponents.
Raider baseball eyes continued perfect start to conference slate
The Raiders (5-2, 3-0) will play two games this week to close out their first round of conference play during the regular season.
Richmond will travel to Overhills High School (3-2, 2-1 MSC) Tuesday and host Pinecrest High School (5-1, 3-0) Friday. The Raiders and Patriots are currently tied for the conference lead.
Both varsity games will start at 7 p.m. Ahead of Friday’s game with Pinecrest, the baseball program and head coach Eric Brown will host a field naming dedication ceremony.
The junior varsity baseball team (2-1, 2-1 MSC) will travel to Overhills and play Pinecrest at home the same days. Both games will start at 4:30 p.m.
Lady Raider softball with one scheduled game
Winning its second game of the season to end last week’s action, the Richmond softball team (2-5) will play just one non-conference game this week.
The Lady Raiders will host South Stanly High School (6-0) Wednesday at 6 p.m. Richmond will try to even its series with the Lady Bulls.
The JV softball team will have the week off and prepare for its MSC opener next week against Pine Forest High School.
Lady Raider soccer with two matches, MSC opener
One of three programs impacted by Monday’s closure of Richmond County Schools, the Lady Raider soccer team will still hit the pitch twice this week.
The varsity Lady Raiders (2-4-1) will host two matches, beginning with non-conference Uwharrie Charter Academy (2-0-1) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Last week, Richmond and the Lady Eagles tied 3-3.
Richmond will then begin its MSC schedule Friday with a home match against Pine Forest (4-1). That match will start at 7 p.m.
The JV Lady Raiders (3-0) will host Union Pines High School Thursday (5:30 p.m.) and Pine Forest Friday (5:15 p.m.).
Head coach Chris Larsen said a make-up date is being worked out to reschedule Monday’s non-conference matches with Forest Hills High School.
Raider tennis to also begin MSC schedule
Unable to play Monday, the Raider tennis team (1-0) will get just one chance to compete this week.
Richmond will open its MSC schedule with a home match Wednesday against Jack Britt High School. Singles matches will start at 4 p.m. and be followed by doubles play.
Monday’s postponed match with Pine Forest has been rescheduled for March 31.
Track and field teams set for first conference meet
Having competed in just one invitational meet so far this spring, the Raider and Lady Raider track and field teams will face two conference opponents in their first MSC meet of the season.
Set to compete at Reid Ross Classical School in Fayetteville, Richmond will face off against Jack Britt and Overhills Thursday. Events will get underway at 4:30 p.m.
Raider golf team to begin season Tuesday
The final spring sports team to officially open its season, the Raider golf team and first-year head coach Chris Turner will have to wait an extra day to hit the links.
The third program impacted by Monday’s weather threat, the Raiders will now open their season Tuesday with a nine-hole conference match at Bayonet at Puppy Creek in Raeford.
Richmond’s six golfers will tee off starting at 3 p.m.
