The Week Ahead: All RSHS fall sports teams in action

Volleyball, tennis among teams to open MSC play

Posted

ROCKINGHAM — For the first time this school year, all of Richmond’s fall sports programs will be in action this week.

It will also be the first time that several teams begin Mid-South Conference play in the first year of the newly formed 8A/7A split conference.

Volleyball enters MSC play with wave of momentum

The Lady Raider volleyball team opened its season with nine straight non-conference matches and recorded a 6-3 record. The Lady Raiders, who are coming off a reverse sweep in their last outing over Scotland High School, will look to keep that momentum going forward.

Richmond will begin by playing two of the MSC’s four 7A schools — Pine Forest and Jack Britt high schools. The Lady Raiders will play at Pine Forest (0-9) Tuesday and host Jack Britt (3-4) Thursday. Both matches are set for 6:30 p.m.

The JV Lady Raiders (4-5) will follow the same match schedule as varsity and begin play at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Boys’ soccer to play 2 non-conference matches

Earning its second win of the season in its lone match last week, the Richmond boys’ soccer team will get two more chances to add to the win column against non-conference opponents this week.

Up first for the Raiders (2-4-1) will be a home match Monday against St. Pauls High School (3-2-1), followed by a road match at Montgomery Central High School (6-1) Wednesday. Both varsity matches will start at 7 p.m.

The JV Raiders (4-3) play both days at 5:15 p.m. and will play home against St. Pauls and at Montgomery Central.

Girls’ tennis opens MSC slate

After a pair of what head coach Jessica Covington called “unofficial matches” last week against Marlboro Academy and Pinecrest High School, the Lady Raider tennis team will join volleyball by playing conference opponents.

Richmond (1-3) will host two MSC matches starting Monday against Pine Forest, with Jack Britt visiting Wednesday. Singles matches will start at 4 p.m.

Cross country teams, girls’ golf set for first contests

After not competing in its first meet of the season last week due to eligibility issues, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams will compete twice this week.

First will be an MSC meet at Pinecrest High School Wednesday that will also feature Jack Britt and Overhills High School. Thursday will be a non-conference home meet against Anson High School at Hinson Lake. Races will be held at 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The girls’ golf team will kick off its new season Monday with a nine-hole match at Pinehurst No. 6, hosted by Pinecrest. Golfers will tee off beginning at 3 p.m.

Football on the road for second time this season

The Richmond Raider football team (1-2) will look to even its season record for the second time this season when it makes its second road trip in four games this fall.

Friday’s matchup will see the Raiders play at Northwest Guilford High School (1-2) and play the non-conference Vikings for the first time since the 2013 playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

The Richmond Observer will publish a preview article later this week.

The JV football team (2-0) returns to the gridiron after a week off Thursday. The JV Raiders will host Northwest Guilford and start at 6:30 p.m.
