ROCKINGHAM — As the temperatures continue to rise, spring sports at Richmond Senior High School also continue to heat up this week.

Just over half of the school’s spring sports programs will be in action, including the second week of the regular season for baseball, softball and girls’ soccer. Competing for the first time will be the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams.

Raider baseball hopes to continue strong start

The Raiders and head coach Eric Brown have started 2-0 through the first week of the regular season. The team will get two more chances this week to add to the win column.

On the road twice, the Raiders (2-0) will first close its two-game series with Scotland High School (0-2) Tuesday at 6 p.m. That will be followed by a trip to Pine Forest High School (0-0) to open Mid-South Conference play Friday at 7 p.m.

New to this season, all of the MSC’s baseball teams will play three games against each other. The first time through the conference lineup will feature one game against each team, followed by a two-game series later in the season.

Set to make its debut at Pine Forest, the Richmond junior varsity baseball team will play its first game starting at 4:30 p.m. The JV Raiders return to the diamond after not having a team last year.

Lady Raider softball eyeing first win

Only getting to play one of its two scheduled games last week due to wet weather, the Lady Raider softball team and head coach Caroline Wilson are looking for their first win of the spring.

The Lady Raiders (0-1) have three non-conference games scheduled this week, starting with a home game Monday against Anson High School (0-1) at 6 p.m.

That will be followed by a road game at Union Pines High School (1-0) Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and the week will end with a home game against Lumberton High School (0-1) Friday at 7 p.m.

Richmond’s JV softball team (1-0) also has three games planned. Monday’s game at West Stanly High School is set to start at 4:30 p.m.

The JV Lady Raiders will follow the varsity team and play at Union Pines Thursday and host Lumberton Friday. Both of those games will start at 4:30 p.m.

Lady Raider soccer set for home opener

Similar to the softball team, the Lady Raider soccer program played just one of its two scheduled matches last week. A three-match week will give the team a chance to get in the win column.

All against non-conference opponents, the Lady Raiders (0-1) will start with Lumberton High School (0-0) at home Monday at 7 p.m. That will be followed by the week’s only road match at Scotland High School (0-1) Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Returning home Friday, the Lady Raiders and head coach Chris Larsen will host Purnell Swett High School (0-0) at 7 p.m.

Richmond’s JV girls’ soccer team will play twice this week, playing its season-opener at home Monday against Lumberton. The JV Lady Raiders will also host Purnell Swett Friday. Both matches are slated for a 5:15 p.m. start.

Track and field teams to open new season

The only programs to compete this coming weekend, the Raider and Lady Raider track and field teams will travel west for their first meet of the season. They’re coached by John Rich and Reggie Miller, respectively.

Heading to Cuthbertson High School, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will compete in the Clash of the Carolinas invitational. Events will begin at 9 a.m.
