ROCKINGHAM — With another week of Richmond Senior High School athletics set to start Monday, some of the six fall sports programs are starting to wind their seasons down.
Football and boys’ soccer will continue their regular seasons, while volleyball, girls’ tennis, cross country and girls’ golf all enter the final stages of Sandhills Athletic Conference action or regionals.
Volleyball to fight for playoff spot in SAC tournament
The Richmond volleyball team closed its regular season last week and is currently projected as one of the final teams to make the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs.
To try and strengthen their chances, the No. 6 Lady Raiders will make a run at the SAC championship tournament crown.
Richmond (7-13) will face No. 3 Union Pines High School (13-7) on the road Monday in the first round. The first serve is set for 6 p.m.
Smith to represent Richmond girls’ tennis at regionals
The Richmond girls’ tennis team also saw its season wrap up last week, but senior Hanna Smith will represent the Lady Raiders in the postseason.
Smith will compete in the singles tournament of the NCHSAA 4A Mideast regional tournament Friday and Saturday. The event will be held at Chapel Hill High School.
Cross country teams to run in SAC championship
A final regular-season race awaits the Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams, along with the possibility to qualify for the postseason.
The Raiders and Lady Raiders will run in the SAC championship at Dragon Park in Laurinburg Tuesday. The first race will start at 5 p.m., followed by the second race at 5:30 p.m.
Runners on both teams will try to punch individual or team berths to the NCHSAA 4A Mideast regional race.
Girls’ golf ready for final regular-season match
Pinehurst Resort No. 6 will be the site of the final SAC girls’ golf match of the regular season Monday.
The Lady Raiders will play 18 holes and begin teeing off at 2 p.m. Currently, only freshman Talley Webb has locked in her spot in the regional tournament.
Boys’ soccer continues SAC slate
The Raiders (4-10-2, 3-4-1 SAC) have another two-match week on the schedule, both against SAC opponents.
Currently fifth in the SAC standings, Richmond will travel to fourth-place Union Pines (6-8-2, 3-3-2 SAC) Monday and host third-place Lee County High School (8-9, 5-3 SAC) Wednesday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
Following the same schedule, the junior varsity Raiders (7-6-2, 4-2-1 SAC) will start their matches at 5 p.m.
Football set for final regular-season road trip
Riding a five-game winning streak and now the current leader in the SAC standings, the Raiders (6-2, 4-0 SAC) and head coach Brad Denson will face one more regular-season road test.
Richmond will head to Lee County (4-3, 1-2 SAC) Friday, its final of nine straight games to start the season before its bye week next week.
The JV Raiders (6-2, 3-1 SAC) will host the JV Yellow Jackets Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
