ROCKINGHAM — Fall and winter sports will overlap this week for the first time this school year.

Two fall sports remain in action at Richmond Senior High School and the tryout period for winter sports is also set to begin.

Raider soccer chasing playoff spot

The Richmond boys’ soccer team will play its final two regular-season matches this week, both away.

Richmond (7-11-2, 3-5-1 MSC), which is fourth in the Mid-South Conference standings, will play its final conference game Monday at first-place Pinecrest High School (9-4-1, 8-1 MSC).

The Raiders’ regular-season finale is set for Tuesday at non-conference Union Pines High School (6-13). Both matches will start at 7 p.m.

Richmond’s junior varsity soccer team will wrap up its season at Pinecrest and Union Pines and play both matches at 5 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 31 is the NCHSAA’s playoff bracketing day for boys’ soccer. Richmond is currently a bubble team.

Inaugural MSC football title set for Friday

The stage is set for what many football fans expected to be the matchup in the first Mid-South Conference football championship.

Richmond (7-2, 4-0 MSC) will host Pinecrest (8-1, 4-0) Friday in a battle of conference unbeatens for the MSC crown.

Friday will also be Richmond’s senior night. Ahead of kickoff, the team’s 22 seniors will be recognized. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

The JV football team (7-1, 4-0 MSC) will travel to Pinecrest Thursday and also play for the conference title. That game will start at 6:30 p.m.

Winter sport tryouts to begin

Several of Richmond’s winter sports programs will hold tryouts toward the end of the week.

The girls’ basketball program will hold tryouts Wednesday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Those same days will see the boys’ basketball program begin its tryout period starting at 5 p.m.

The girls’ indoor track and field program will hold tryouts Wednesday and Thursday, and conclude them on Monday, Nov. 3. Each tryout will start at 3:45 p.m.

Boys and girls interested in joining the swimming teams will attend tryouts Monday, Nov. 3 and Tuesday, Nov. 4 at FirstHealth.

There have been no tryout dates posted for the co-ed bowling and wrestling programs. All student-athletes must have updated files on Big Teams in order to be eligible to try out.
