The Week Ahead: Full schedule for winter sports planned

Posted

ROCKINGHAM — Better weather conditions in the coming week will allow Richmond Senior High School’s winter sports programs to return to a normal schedule.

Following last Tuesday’s snowfall, Richmond’s athletic teams were sidelined the rest of the week, save for one meet over the weekend.

Basketball teams set for trio of conference games

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have recently endured their second long stretch without playing this season. When they return to the court Monday for the first of their three games, it will be their first game in 10 days.

All three games this week will be against Sandhills Athletic Conference teams, starting with a make-up game on the road at Lee County High School Monday.

That will be followed by a home game Tuesday against Pinecrest High School and another road game Friday at Hoke County High School.

The Lady Raiders (10-5, 4-1 SAC) will start all three games at 6 p.m., followed by the Raiders (8-7, 3-2 SAC), winners of seven straight games, at 7:30 p.m.

The junior varsity boys’ basketball team (3-6, 2-2 SAC) will play all three nights, while the girls’ junior varsity basketball team (3-3, 2-2 SAC) will play at Pinecrest and home against Hoke County.

Wrestling conference championship rescheduled

Originally scheduled for this past Saturday, the SAC championship wrestling meet was moved to Wednesday at Union Pines High School.

Several Raiders will contend for individual weight class conference titles while the team will also compete for regional qualification. Matches will start at 5:30 p.m.

Bowling teams to recognize seniors

Richmond’s bowling teams will return to action after missing last week’s SAC meet due to weather. Thursday’s meet will be at the Sandhills Bowling Center in Aberdeen, as Richmond will face Hoke County, Scotland and Union Pines high schools.

The Lady Raiders (7-3) and Raiders (4-6) will also recognize the program’s seven seniors — Jabari Douglas, Ahjujuan Ewing, Dazion Moseley, Hanna Smith, Landon Summerlin, Landon Taylor and Ava Thompson.

Seniors will be recognized at 3:45 p.m. with the trio of matches to follow.

Indoor track and field to prep for conference championship

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams competed over the weekend, just their first team meet of the season due to weather.

Despite the shortened season, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will participate in the Sandhills Athletic Conference championship meet Friday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. The all-day event will start at 9 a.m.

Swimming season comes to abrupt end

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming teams saw their season come to an end last week, in part because of the weather.

The SAC championship meet was originally scheduled for last Wednesday and it was announced the title meet would not be made up because of the quick turnaround for regionals.

Neither the Raiders or Lady Raiders qualified for the postseason as a team or had any individual qualifiers.
