ROCKINGHAM — This week marks the final stretch of the regular season for Richmond Senior High School’s winter sports programs, as well as the official start for the spring sports teams.

Just three winter sports teams remain in action – basketball, indoor track and field and wrestling. Monday will also kick off the first day of spring sports tryouts for many of Richmond’s teams.

Basketball teams set for final regular season games

Twice this week the Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will play make-up games to close out the regular season, both against Mid-South Conference opponents.

The Lady Raiders (10-10, 4-4 MSC) currently sit in third place in the standings, while the Raiders (16-6, 6-2 MSC) enter the week in first place with a one-game lead.

Both teams will host Jack Britt High School Monday, followed by the regular-season finale at Pine Forest High School Friday.

Jack Britt’s boys’ and girls’ teams are both ranked fourth in the standings, with Pine Forest’s girls in fifth place and boys in sixth place. Game times are set for 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days.

Indoor track and field teams headed to state championship meet

Announced Sunday, a total of seven student-athletes will compete for Richmond in the NCHSAA 7A state championship indoor track and field meet Wednesday.

In order to qualify, student-athletes had to rank in the top 12 spots of their respective events.

Representing the Lady Raiders will be senior Ka’mora Watkins (triple jump) and freshman Shamia Williams (long jump).

The Raiders will have three individual competitors – seniors Tyrese Collins (triple jump), Keonta Pegues (55-meter dash, long jump) and Domonic Tillman (triple jump).

Richmond’s boys’ 4x200-meter relay team will also compete. Those runners are Collins, Pegues, senior Christian Surgent and sophomore Ty Covington.

The state championship meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem and start Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Two Raider wrestlers set for state title bid

Following this past weekend’s 7A West regional championship, two of Richmond’s six wrestlers qualified for the 7A state championship this weekend.

Senior Jason Gainey (190-pounds) and sophomore Dylan Nunez (120-pounds) will start their quest at an individual state title Friday and continue Saturday at the First Horizon Coliseum (formerly known as the Greensboro Coliseum).

The Richmond Observer will publish the results of this past weekend’s 7A West regional championship soon.
