The Week Ahead: MSC action dominates schedule

Football program on Week 6 bye

Posted

ROCKINGHAM — The upcoming week will feature all of Richmond Senior High School’s fall sports teams with the exception of the football program.

At the halfway point of the season, the varsity and junior varsity football teams are on their bye week before starting Mid-South Conference play the first week of October.

Volleyball, boys’ soccer, girls’ tennis, cross country and girls’ golf will all be in action against MSC opponents.

Volleyball looks to end skid, 3 matches scheduled

Although competitive in their two matches last week, the Lady Raiders (8-5, 2-2 MSC) lost both of their conference contests. This week they’ll get three chances to start a new winning streak.

Richmond will open the week at home Monday against non-conference Montgomery Central High School (3-11).

That will be followed by MSC matches Tuesday at Pinecrest High School (7-9, 3-1 MSC) and Thursday at home against Pine Forest High School (0-13, 0-4 MSC). All varsity matches will begin around 6:30 p.m.

In junior varsity play, the JV Lady Raiders (6-7, 2-2 MSC) will play the same opponents at the same locations. Those matches are set for 5 p.m.

Soccer opens MSC action with 2 matches

Ending non-conference play with a pair of wins last week, the Raiders (4-6-1) will look to get off to a strong start with two MSC matchups.

Richmond will open conference action at Pine Forest (3-6-2) Monday, and return home Wednesday to host Jack Britt High School (5-2-2). Those games will get underway at 7 p.m.

The JV Raiders (6-4) will visit Pine Forest and host Jack Britt ahead of both varsity matches. The start times are both at 5:15 p.m.

Girls’ tennis to roll over to second round of MSC slate

Similar to the volleyball team, the Lady Raider tennis team (2-4, 1-2 MSC) will end its first round of regular-season conference action and start the second this week.

First the team will travel to Pinecrest Monday and end the week Wednesday at home against Pine Forest. Singles matches will start at 4 p.m., followed by doubles.

Cross country teams to host MSC race

After strong runs last week, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams will host their second meet of the season at Hinson Lake Wednesday.

It will be the second 3-mile race at home for the teams this season, but the first to feature MSC opponents. Richmond will welcome in Pine Forest and Overhills high schools.

The boys’ race will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the girls at 4:30 p.m.

Final 9-hole match for girls’ golf team

For the third and final time this season, the Lady Raider golf team will compete in a nine-hole match Monday.

Facing the other MSC schools with golf programs, the Lady Raiders will tee off at Kings Grant Golf Club, a match hosted by Pine Forest.

The shotgun start for golfers will tee off at 3 p.m.

Bye week in effect for Raider football

On the heels of an exciting fourth-quarter comeback victory over ranked West Forsyth High School, the Raider football team (3-2) will get a week to rest and reset before beginning its five-game MSC schedule.

Richmond’s next varsity game is Friday, Oct. 3, at Pine Forest (1-4) at 7:30 p.m. The JV team (3-1) will host the JV Trojans Thursday, Oct. 2, at 6:30 p.m.
