ROCKINGHAM — The short hiatus between fall and winter sports at Richmond Senior High School is over as the next season starts to pick up momentum this week.
The lone fall sports team still in action is the Raider football team in the state playoffs.
The wrestling team, which opened its season this past weekend, will be joined by the season debuts of the girls’ indoor track and field, boys’ and girls’ swimming and girls’ basketball teams.
First meet for girls’ indoor track and field
Richmond’s girls’ track and field team will compete in its first meet of the season Tuesday. The meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem and events will start at 4:30 p.m.
Wrestling set for two non-conference duals
After starting its season this past weekend, the Raider wrestling team will travel twice more this week for a pair of non-conference meets.
First will be a trip to North Moore High School Wednesday (5 p.m.), followed by a meet at Scotland High School Saturday (9 a.m.)
Swimming teams to open season
Also opening their season this week will be the Richmond boys’ and girls’ swimming teams. They will compete against other Mid-South Conference opponents Thursday.
Meets this season will be held at the James A. Leach Aquatic Center in Raeford. Events will start at 6 p.m.
Lady Raider basketball to begin second season with Reader
The final team to make its season debut this week will be the Lady Raider basketball team. Under the direction of second-year head coach Taneika Reader, the Lady Raiders will play at non-conference New Hanover High School Saturday at 2 p.m.
Playing at noon will be the junior varsity girls’ basketball team, also on the road at New Hanover.
Bowling tryouts planned this week
The Richmond boys’ and girls’ bowling teams will hold two days of tryouts this week. Bowlers interested must attend both days of tryouts Tuesday and Wednesday, and it’s mandatory that bowlers attend between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Raider football travels to Independence to renew rivalry
After surviving a second-round scare, the No. 6 Raiders (9-2) will travel to No. 3 Independence High School (9-2) Friday for the third round of the NCHSAA 7A West state playoffs.
The rivalry from the first decade of the 2000s will be renewed as the Raiders and head coach Brad Denson look to advance to the fourth round for the first time since 2019.
Kickoff is temporarily scheduled for 7 p.m. Online tickets will be available on GoFan this week.
The Richmond Observer will publish a preview article later in the week.
