ROCKINGHAM — With just over a month until graduation, the local high school spring sports scene is winding down and ramping up at the same time.
The regular season for many of Richmond Senior High School’s teams are nearing completion, while several of them are also gearing up for the postseason.
Baseball can claim MSC title with 2 wins
The Richmond baseball team has a shot at winning its first outright regular season conference title for the first time in more than a decade.
To do so, the Raiders (16-6, 11-2 MSC) will need to sweep their two games this week against current leader Pinecrest High School (18-5, 12-1 MSC).
Having lost the first meeting this season, Richmond will travel to face the Patriots Tuesday. The regular season finale will take place Thursday at Raider Field, which will also be senior night for Richmond’s five senior players.
Both games between the Raiders and Patriots are scheduled for 7 p.m.
The JV Raider baseball team (10-5, 10-3 MSC) will travel to Pinecrest Tuesday and host the JV Patriots Thursday in its final game of the season. Those games are set to start at 4:30 p.m.
Softball looking to stay near top of MSC standings
Currently second in the MSC standings, the Richmond softball team (7-12, 5-3 MSC) will close its regular season with one non-conference game and two MSC games.
First will be a trip to non-conference Lumberton High School (12-10) Monday, as the Lady Raiders will look to even their series with the Lady Pirates. That will be followed by two games against fifth-place conference foe Pinecrest (8-10, 2-6 MSC).
The Lady Raiders will travel to Pinecrest Tuesday and host the Lady Patriots Thursday. Both games are set for 6:30 p.m.
The JV Lady Raiders (13-1, 8-0), winners of their last 12 games, will visit Lumberton Monday (4:30 p.m.). They’ll also play at Pinecrest Tuesday and host Pinecrest Thursday (both at 5 p.m.).
Girls’ soccer ready for final two conference matches
With three matches left in the regular season, the Richmond girls’ soccer team will play two of them this week.
Looking to build off their first conference win of the season, the Lady Raiders (5-10-2, 1-6-1 MSC) will play their final two conference games Tuesday and Friday.
First will be a road match at Overhills High School (5-6-4, 2-4-2 MSC) Tuesday, followed by a home match with Pinecrest (14-0-3, 8-0 MSC) Friday. Both matches are at 7 p.m.
The JV girls’ soccer team (7-5, 4-4 MSC) will play at Overhills (5 p.m.) and host Pinecrest (5:15 p.m) the same days.
Boys’ tennis to play in dual team regionals
The first team at Richmond to start its postseason, the boys’ tennis team is set for the 7A dual team postseason to begin Monday.
Traveling to Weddington High School, the Raiders will try to advance to the second round. Matches will begin at 4 p.m.
Boys’ golf set for MSC finale, non-conference match
The Raider golf team, which is safely in second place in the MSC standings, will golf twice this week as regionals quickly approach.
Richmond and the other MSC teams will play a full round at Gates Four Golf and Country Club Monday in the conference’s final match of the season.
Wednesday will see the Raiders compete in a non-conference match at Piney Point Golf Club. The contest will give golfers a final chance to lower their season averages and try to qualify for regionals.
Both matches will begin with shotgun starts at 2 p.m.
Track and field teams to compete in MSC championship meet
Richmond’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will compete in the MSC championship meet Wednesday.
The conference title meet will be held at Pinecrest and start at 4:30 p.m.
The Richmond Observer will publish the results of this past weekend’s invitational at Gray’s Creek High School Monday.
