ROCKINGHAM — Rivalry week will look a little different for Richmond Senior High School this fall sports season.
Traditionally, Richmond and neighboring Scotland High School have faced one another in the final conference game or match of the season.
But with the shakeup of the NCHSAA’s new classifications and conference, the Raiders and Fighting Scots are no longer in a split conference.
Luckily for both communities, the tradition will continue, albeit much earlier in the season than normal. Richmond and Scotland will meet on the volleyball and tennis courts, as well as the soccer and football fields this week.
Volleyball carries winning streak into rivalry week
The most successful program on campus to start the new fall sports season has been the Richmond volleyball team. Riding a four-match win streak, the Lady Raiders (4-1) will get two more chances this week to keep it going.
Starting Tuesday at home, the Lady Raiders will host Scotland (2-1) at 6:30 p.m. That will be followed by a road match at Uwharrie Charter Academy (5-3) Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Richmond’s junior varsity volleyball team (2-3) will face the same two opponents this week. Both matches will start at 5 p.m.
Soccer eyes first win, begin week with Scotland
Looking to end a three-match losing streak to start the season, the Richmond boys’ soccer team will have three non-conference matches this week to do so.
Up first is a rivalry matchup at Scotland (1-1) Monday, followed by a home match Wednesday against Terry Sanford High School. The week will end on the road at Ballantyne Ridge High School Thursday. All three varsity matches will start at 7 p.m.
The JV Raiders (2-1) will not play Scotland. They’ll host Terry Sanford Wednesday (5:15 p.m.) and travel to Ballantyne Ridge Thursday (5:30 p.m.).
Tennis continues with two non-conference matches
After dropping its season opener last week, the Lady Raider tennis team will play two non-conference matches this week.
Starting on the road Monday, Richmond (0-1) will face former conference opponent Union Pines High School. The Lady Raiders will return home Tuesday to host Scotland for a rivalry contest. Both matches will begin with singles play at 4 p.m.
Football looks to enter win column against Scots
Moving past its loss Friday to begin the season, the Richmond football team will get its chance to break into the win column against the Fighting Scots.
Hosting Scotland (1-0) in their home opener, the Raiders (0-1) will try to win their third straight game over coach Richard Bailey and their neighbors to the east. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Richmond Observer will publish a preview article later this week. Friday is also cheer night.
Richmond’s JV football team (1-0) will try for its second win of the season in as many tries when it travels to Scotland Thursday. Action will start at 6:30 p.m.
