THE WEEK AHEAD: RSHS sports return following spring break

Posted

ROCKINGHAM — Area high school sports return to full action this week following spring break.

With most of Richmond Senior High School’s spring sports team near or slightly past the midway point of their seasons, all six programs will compete this week. Most contests will be against Mid-South Conference opponents.

Baseball team ramped up for 3 games

Fresh off its runner-up finish at the Beach Diamond Invitational, the Richmond baseball team will close another MSC series this week and host a non-conference opponent as well.

The Raiders (12-4, 8-1 MSC) will look to stay near the top of the conference standings with a two-game series with Hoke County High School (8-7, 5-4 MSC). Currently, the teams are second and third, respectively in the MSC.

Tuesday’s game will be played in Raeford, followed by the three-game season series finale at Raider Field Friday. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.

To end the week, Richmond will host non-conference Ashley High School (3-15) Saturday at 4 p.m.

The JV Raiders (7-3, 7-2 MSC) will play at Hoke County Tuesday (4:30 p.m.), host the JV Bucks Friday (4:30 p.m.) and welcome Ashley Saturday at 1 p.m.

Softball also scheduled for 3 games

Similar to the baseball team, the Richmond softball team will play a conference series and one non-conference game.

The Lady Raiders (5-8, 3-1 MSC) will play a two-game set with first-place Hoke County (12-2, 4-0 MSC) Tuesday on the road and Friday at home. Both games are set for 6:30 p.m.

Also hosting a non-conference game Wednesday, Richmond will try to even its series with Scotland High School (9-7) at 6 p.m.

Richmond’s JV softball team (9-1, 3-0 MSC), which has won eight straight games, will travel Tuesday to Hoke and host the JV Lady Bucks Friday. Those games will start at 5 p.m.

Girls’ soccer to begin next round of MSC action

An extended break will continue for the Richmond girls’ soccer team, which will only play once this week.

The Lady Raiders (3-8-2, 0-4-1 MSC) will begin the second round of regular season play against conference teams Friday with an away match at Pine Forest High School (8-3-1, 3-1 MSC). That match will start at 7 p.m.

Richmond’s JV girls’ soccer team (5-4, 3-2 MSC) is set to play at Pine Forest Friday at 5 p.m.

Boys’ golf to move to 18-hole matches

To start the second half of its season, the Richmond boys’ golf team will play two 18-hole matches on its home course this week.

Monday’s match will be the first full round played this season for the Raiders, who will face the other MSC teams at Foxfire Resort and Golf. They’re currently second in the standings.

That will be followed by an 18-hole match Tuesday at Foxfire against non-conference Anson High School. Both matches will start at 2 p.m.

Boys’ tennis, track and field teams will compete once

Competing once this week will be the boys’ tennis team and the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams.

The Raider tennis team (4-4, 3-3 MSC) will travel to Jack Britt High School Monday. Singles play will start at 4 p.m.

After a long wait thanks to renovations made to the track, the Richmond track and field teams will finally get to compete at home this week. Their meet Tuesday will be against Overhills High School and is set for 4:30 p.m.
