The Week Ahead: Winter, spring sports overlap for Richmond Senior

Basketball postseason begins; spring sports set to start

ROCKINGHAM — Winter and spring sports will overlap this week for athletic programs at Richmond Senior High School.

The postseason will start for Richmond’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams while a host of spring sports programs kick off their respective seasons.

Basketball teams begin postseason runs

Both of Richmond's basketball teams received first-round home games for the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs this season.

Finalized Sunday evening, the No. 3 Lady Raiders (19-5) will host No. 30 Heritage High School (10-14) in the first round. The No. 8 Raiders (15-9) will welcome in No. 25 South View High School (16-10).

The games are tenatively scheudled to be played at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Should the Raiders or Lady Raiders advance, the second round of the playoffs will be played Friday at the higher seed.

Bowling state championship rescheduled

The Richmond boys’ and girls’ bowling teams will make up their state championship meet Tuesday. Held at the Sandhills Bowling Center in Aberdeen, the team portion of the event will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the singles tournament.

Representing the Lady Raiders in the singles championship are senior Ava Thompson and freshman Sydney Barnes.

Girls’ soccer opens spring sports season

Set to become the first spring sports team to officially begin its season, the Lady Raider soccer team will play its first match against non-conference Jack Britt High School at home Monday. The junior varsity team will start at 5 p.m., followed by varsity at 7 p.m.

Both teams will play away at Terry Sanford High School Wednesday (5 p.m. and 7 p.m.), followed by just the varsity team playing at Pine Forest High School Friday (6 p.m.).

Baseball, softball teams begin new seasons

The Raider baseball and Lady Raider softball teams will both begin action this week against non-conference opponents.

Opening their season Wednesday, the Raiders will travel to Marvin Ridge High School and start at 6:30 p.m. Richmond will host Porter Ridge High School in its home opener Friday at 7 p.m.

Head coach Eric Brown and the Raiders will cap its three-game opening week at Weddington High School Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

The Lady Raiders will begin play Thursday at home against North Moore High School (6 p.m.) and travel to Montgomery Central High School Friday (7 p.m.). The junior varsity softball team will only play at Montgomery Central Friday (5 p.m.)

Note: There is no junior varsity baseball team this season. Season previews for the baseball and softball teams will be published this week.

Boys’ tennis begins play on the road

Also starting its season this week, the Raider tennis team and head coach Jessica Covington will start their SAC-only schedule Tuesday at Southern Lee High School.

That will be followed by another away match Thursday at Pinecrest High School. Both matches will start at 4 p.m.
