ROCKINGHAM — More than 6,000 homes and businesses in Richmond County are without electricity Wednesday afternoon.
Duke Energy is reporting that 2,614 of its customers are without power and Pee Dee Electric has around 3,600 in the dark.
There were reports on social media of outages in Rockingham, Hamlet and Cordova and points in between. One commenter posted that “Walmart is turning people way because they have no power …”
There are also reports that the outage is affecting traffic lights.
Pee Dee Electric posted the following message to its Facebook page at 3:07 p.m.:
This outage is due to a Duke Energy transmission issue that is affecting multiple utilities and customers in the area, including Pee Dee Electric members. Crews are working with Duke Energy to identify the cause and restore power as safely and quickly as possible. At this time, we do not have a confirmed restoration timeframe, but we will provide updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Duke estimates power restoration by 8:30 p.m.
