ROCKINGHAM — Despite last Thursday’s meet ending early due to wet weather, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ track and field team impressed on its home turf.

Registering 110 points, the Raiders won the meet, which was a combination of Sandhills Athletic Conference teams and other non-conference opponents.

Competing in Richmond’s lone home meet this season were SAC programs Hoke County, Southern Lee and Union Pines high schools. Albemarle and Father Vincent Capodanno high schools were the two non-conference teams.

Securing double-digit points in many of the events they competed in, the Raiders secured the win thanks to 20 points in the discus, 18 points in the 110-meter dash and 17 points in the 100-meter dash.

Earning second through fifth place in the discus were sophomore Jeremiah Covington (113’-9”, 8 points), junior Jordan Hamilton (105’-11”, 6 points), junior Laurence Williams (101’-0”, 4 points) and sophomore Jamaury Jones (100’-4”, 2 points). Jones’ throw was a season-best.

Two Raiders, sophomores Alijah Flowers and Jeremy Lindsey, combined for all of the points in the 110-meter hurdles. Flowers won the event and picked up 10 points with a time of 18.00 seconds, while Lindsey set a new season-best time of 19.09 seconds for eight points in second place.

A trio of sprinters also did damage in the 100-meter dash, led by freshman Ty Covington and his second-place time of 10.70 seconds (8 points). Junior Jayden Hamilton was third overall (10.75 seconds, 6 points) and senior Deshaun Ingram tied for fourth with three points (10.98 seconds).

All three sprinters recorded their fastest times of the season during their respective heats.

The Raiders picked up double-digit points in the 400-meter dash (14 points), the triple jump (12 points), the shot put (11 points) and the 4x200-meter relay (10 points).

Juniors Amer Morrison (50.33 seconds, 8 points) and Christian Surgent (53.69 seconds, 6 points) went second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Morrison recorded his fastest time this season.

The Raiders’ 4x200-meter roster made the two laps around the track in 1:32.82 for first place and 10 points.

Picking up the team’s final combined eight points were Surgent in the long jump (fourth place, 18’-2.25”), the 4x100-meter relay team (tied for fourth place, 45.38 seconds) and freshman Elliot Samuel in the 1600-meter run (5:48.32, sixth place).
