GREENSBORO — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ track and field team was well represented at this year’s state championship meet.
A total of seven Raiders competed for a chance at a state championship medal in four events at the NCHSAA 4A state championship meet last Saturday.
Held at North Carolina A&T State University, Richmond put forth strong efforts in the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays, the 300-meter hurdles and the triple jump.
Although the Raiders didn’t bring home any hardware, they finished in the top 10 in each event.
Junior Domonic Tillman recorded the team’s best performance of the meet, taking fourth in the state in the triple jump.
Tillman’s longest attempt landed at 45’-3.5”. Finishing in third place was London Myles of Hopewell High School (47’-5”) and winning the event was Alexander Chapman-Evans (48’-10.75”) from Enloe High School.
Richmond had two sixth-place times in the 300-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay dash.
Senior Aaron Coleman closed his impressive high school career with a time of 39.31 seconds in the hurdles race. He was under two seconds off the pace of state title winner Nyan Brown (37.11 seconds) of Mallard Creek High School.
After winning the NCHSAA 4A Mideast regional championship the week prior, Richmond’s 4x100-meter relay team cruised around the track to a final time of 42.19 seconds.
Passing the baton for the Raiders were Coleman, juniors Jayden Hamilton and Keonta Pegues, and freshman Ty Covington. Mallard Creek’s time of 40.99 seconds was fast enough for first place.
The final placement for Richmond was the 4x200-meter relay team, which was run by Covington, Hamilton and juniors Amer Morrison and Christian Surgent.
Completing their two laps around the track, the Raiders clocked in at 1:29.78 for 10th place. Mallard Creek’s 4x200 relay team also won the event (1:25.14).
With 71 points, Mallard Creek won the 4A team state championship, well ahead of second-place Cuthbertson High School (40 points). Richmond had 11 points and tied for 21st place out of 60 teams.
