Cosey, Odom, Turner compete in 7A Central tournament

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ golf team is the first spring sports program to be featured in our review of the 2025-26 school year.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Turner, the Raiders had continued success across the board this past season.

In addition to playing more matches, the Raiders were able to finish second in the Mid-South Conference standings, trailing only eventual state champion Pinecrest High School.

Using a core group of three golfers, Richmond was led by senior Kevin Cosey and juniors Graham Odom and CJ Turner.

Those three returned to the 7A regional championship as a group for the second straight year, making it the high point of the season for the team.

GREENSBORO — Giving a tough course their best effort, three Richmond Raider golfers competed in the postseason Tuesday.

Representing the Raiders and head coach Chris Turner at the NCHSAA 7A Central regional tournament were senior Kevin Cosey and juniors Graham Odom and CJ Turner.

Playing in a field of 48 golfers from around the region, the three Raiders needed to make the cutline of 78 (+7) to advance to the individual state championship round.

Unfortunately, despite charges on the back nine at Starmount Forest Country Club, Cosey, Odom and Turner weren’t able to extend their respective seasons.

Coach Turner, who concluded his first season with the team, said a slow start on the front nine was met with better performances after the turn. Putting, he added, was an issue across the course.

“All three of the guys found a way to get it together on the back, but the speed and hardness of the greens got us,” Coach Turner said. “We had so many three and even four-putts today. But I am very proud of these guys because they didn’t give up.

“They gave it all they could. Sadly, any of these guys could have easily qualified today, but I feel they just tried too hard and put too much on themselves.

“Then they started scoreboard watching,” he continued. “The worst thing they could have done for these kids was make it all electronic scoring. That’s all they watch now. And they have to look to post the scores for the other players on their phones.”

Leading the team on the scorecard was Turner, who finished the round with a score of 81 (+10), missing the cut by just three strokes.

Shooting a 41 (+5) on the front nine holes, Turner had both of his birdies in the round on holes three and four to get back even. He finished with a 40 (+5) on the back nine and had eight total pars, including six on the final nine holes.

Returning to the regional round for the fourth and final time of his career, Cosey was next for Richmond. He capped his career with an 84 (+13), six shots shy of going to states.

Posting a 43 (+8) on the opening nine holes, Cosey put together a better performance on the back nine with a 41 (+5). He birdied No. 14 and ended his day with seven total pars.

Rounding out Richmond’s team effort was Odom, who shot an 89 (+18). He began the day with a 49 (+14) on the front, but a par on No. 9 set him in motion for a strong finish.

On the final nine holes, Odom parred five of his nine opportunities, bringing his total to six pars in the round. His score on the back nine was 40 (+4).

Tuesday’s regional appearance for Odom and Turner marked the second time for both Raiders.

“I am very honored to be able to coach this entire team,” Coach Turner closed. “We came a long way and I am super proud of all the guys. We will continue to work to get better for next year.

“I’m going to miss Kevin,” he said. “He was a staple on this team for four years and I’ve watched him play since middle school. And it’s been a joy.”
