Tough defense ends Lady Raiders' winning streak

GREENSBORO — Unable to make adjustments Saturday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ basketball team suffered its first loss in nearly a month.

Finishing their three-game slate in the Carolina Christmas Classic at Northwest Guilford High School, the Lady Raiders fell to Marvin Ridge High School.

Seeing its seven-game winning streak come to an end, Richmond fell 37-32 to the Lady Mavericks.

“This was a tough loss today,” head coach Taneika Reader shared. “They played Jamyia Lindsey in a box-and-one and we weren’t fully prepared for it, so I will take responsibility for this one. But we will be ready the next time we come across this type of defense.

“Overall, I’m really proud of the girls’ effort and fight today, and games like this will help us when it comes to the state playoffs.”

Junior Jasiah Gilchrist had a team-high 12 points, followed by junior Olivia Brown’s 8 points.

Lindsey finished with 7 points. Also scoring for Richmond were senior Rena Drake (3 points) and sophomore Madisen Jackson (2 points).

The Lady Raiders took a 7-5 lead after the opening quarter. Gilchrist had four points on a basket and two free throws, with Drake making a three-pointer.

Using its defense to shut down Richmond, Marvin Ridge (9-3) built a cushion in the second quarter with an 11-3 run.

Two free throws from Gilchrist and another from Lindsey accounted for the Lady Raiders’ scoring. At halftime, Richmond trailed 16-10.

The Lady Raiders saw that deficit grow to nine points, 28-19, following the third stanza. Brown had a triple and Lindsey scored her next three points on an and-one opportunity.

Jackson netted her lone field goal in the game and Gilchrist added a shot from the foul line.

The Lady Raiders’ highest-scoring quarter resulted in a 13-9 run in the fourth. Gilchrist and Brown both had five points, including Brown’s second three-ball of the game.

Lindsey rounded out the scoring with her final three points. She made a bucket and a free throw.

Marvin Ridge’s Kate Schindler led all scorers with 15 points.

Richmond (9-4) has off until returning to Sandhills Athletic Conference play Jan. 7 at home against Union Pines High School. That game will start at 6 p.m.
