HAMLET — Rail traffic through the Seaboard City has been temporarily ceased as crews work to clear the scene of a train collision.
Two CSX trains collided around 10:30 a.m. Saturday just southeast of the Depot, according to Hamlet Police Chief James Carsto.
One of the engines derailed and went into the creek behind the fairgrounds.
During the incident, Carsto said a telephone pole was snapped and hit a resident’s car.
No injuries were reported, according to Carsto
First responders — which included the Hamlet Fire and Police departments and Richmond County Emergency Services — were stationed at the fairgrounds and used a drone to get a bird’s eye view of the situation.
Main Street has been blocked from N.C. 38 to Palmetto Wye at the Depot.
Carsto said CSX was notified at 10:45 and the transportation company was sending a crew out to the scene.
At the time of writing, there was no estimate on when the scene would be clear.
