RAEFORD — Similar to the first meeting between Richmond and Hoke County high schools earlier this season, the Lady Raider soccer team recorded a victory.
Completing the regular-season sweep on the road Friday, Richmond blanked the Lady Bucks 4-0.
Getting back in the win column after two straight losses to Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents, the Lady Raiders blanked Hoke County for their fourth shutout victory of the season.
Playing in net and keeping the Lady Bucks (5-11, 2-7 SAC) scoreless was senior goalkeeper Sa’Quanna Bostic.
The Lady Raiders scored a trio of goals in the first half before adding an insurance goal in the final 40 minutes.
Netting the first goal was freshman Erin Drumwright on an assist by senior Mariana Mendez.
Extending the lead was senior Ashly Gonzalez, who scored a team-high two goals. She booted a penalty kick into the net after Hoke County committed a foul in the 18-yard box for her first goal.
Making it 3-0 before the break was junior Makayla Brown. She sent a bouncing ball into the net after a deflection off the back post.
Gonzalez’s second tally was assisted by junior Jentry Denson. She blasted a shot from the right side of the field into the left side netting.
“The girls played well tonight, which boosted our confidence,” head coach Chris Larsen commented. “It was good to see how well we did with our ball movement and the way we found multiple ways to score.
“Tonight was a good step toward making another run at Union Pines next week.”
Richmond (6-8-1, 3-5 SAC) will host current conference leader Union Pines High School (11-3-1, 8-0 SAC) Tuesday at 7 p.m.
JV Lady Raiders also win
Netting a pair of goals in each half Friday, the Richmond junior varsity girls’ soccer team also won.
The JV Lady Raiders defeated Hoke County 4-0.
Scoring a hat trick was sophomore striker Cadence Gazoo. Adding the other tally was freshman Mavery Hooks.
“I thought we played a better second half than we did the first half,” head coach Bennie Howard said. “These girls are still learning, but we only have one game left. We have Union Pines Tuesday, so hopefully we can end the season on a positive note.”
The JV Lady Raiders (5-4, 2-3 SAC) also welcome Union Pines Tuesday, beginning at 5:15 p.m.
