OBITUARY: Ronald Nicholson

Ronald “Ron” Nicholson, 73, of Hamlet, passed on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026. 

Ronald was born in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Walter Nicholson Sr. and Alma “Dolly” Green Nicholson. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Jamaica, Queens, New York, where he received his formal education. 

Ronald was the second-born of three children. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Michael A. Nicholson. 

He is survived by his younger sister, Betty A. McCord of Long Island City, New York; his son, Eric Jamel Jones of New York; his daughter, Jasmine Mason; two nieces, J’Anna Wright of Hamlet, and Ashanti Gayle of Greer, South Carolina; his great-niece, Jalaya of Hamlet; and a host of cousins, extended family members, and friends who will cherish his memory. 

Ronald was exceptionally bright. He was a talented and resourceful man who believed he could accomplish anything he put his mind to. 

After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. During his military service, he was recognized for his outstanding marksmanship and received a medal of honor. He also served as a member of the Army Color Guard. Ronald received an honorable discharge following his service. 

After leaving the military, Ronald worked a variety of jobs, including many years as an employee with UPS. In 1987, following the passing of his father, Ronald relocated from New York to Hamlet, North Carolina, to be with and care for his mother. He continued to work in various positions throughout his years in Hamlet,including many years of service with the City of Hamlet and Hamlet Senior Center. 

Ronald gave his life to the Lord at an early age. Throughout his life, he attended churches in both New York and Hamlet. He later became a member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, where he attended faithfully and regularly until his health began to decline.

Ronald will be remembered for his intelligence, determination, humor, conversation, and ability to accomplish whatever he set his mind to. He touched the lives of many people throughout his journey, and his memory will live on through his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Though he is no longer with us, his legacy, his stories, and the love he shared with those around him will remain in our hearts forever.
