CORDOVA — A discharge of partially treated wastewater into Little Carr Creek occurred at von Drehle Corporation’s facility in Cordova, North Carolina due to a pipe failure on July 9, 2020.
von Drehle estimates that approximately 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of wastewater reached Little Carr Creek between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. on July 9, 2020, at which time the discharge ceased.
Based on the estimated rate and volume of the discharge, and the content of the wastewater involved, von Drehle does not believe the discharge caused a violation of state surface water quality standards in Little Carr Creek.
NCDEQ was notified of the event at 8:26 a.m. on July 9, 2020 and is reviewing the matter.
North Carolina law requires the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment system to issue a press release when a discharge of 1,000 gallons or more of untreated wastewater reaches surface waters. As such, the preceding news release is being issued to media in Richmond County, North Carolina.
