ELLERBE — A man and woman are facing multiple charges after allegedly trying to back over people they were stealing from.
According to warrants, 37-year-old Chad Dwayne Giddens and 44-year-old Jennifer Nicole Dawkins — both listed as being homeless — broke into a building on Anita Lane, north of Ellerbe, on February 22.
The pair are accused of stealing two bicycles, 19 packs of flooring, a chainsaw, a battery powered sawzall, two weedeaters, a spool of wire, a tool box and three katana swords.
Giddens and Dawkins allegedly put a Honda Accord in reverse as two of the victims were trying to remove their property from the trunk. Dawkins is also accused of grabbing a pregnant woman and pushing her down the hallway.
The arrest warrants were issued March 14; Dawkins was arrested the following day and Giddens two days later.
Dawkins and Giddens are each charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one felony count each of breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering. Dawkins is also charged with assault on a pregnant woman.
Giddens is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $10,000 secured bond and Dawkins on a $12,500 secured bond. Both are scheduled to appear in court March 27.
Records show Giddens has an additional $1,000 cash bond for failing to appear in Montgomery County court on traffic citations in December.
Dawkins has several pending traffic citations from the Rockingham Police Department, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
Court records show Giddens took a plea deal in July 2024 to breaking and entering, injury to utility company property and possession of stolen goods or property and charges of larceny of a motor vehicle was dismissed and injury to real property were dismissed.
Records show charges of identity card theft and identity fraud were also dismissed.
In September, Giddens was charged with a probation violation for not reporting to the probation officer, records show. He admitted to the violation and served an additional 20 days — after being given credit for time served — in jail.
Earlier in 2024, Giddens was found guilty of resisting a public officer and second-degree trespassing, attempted misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor larceny and breaking and entering. Those are not reflected in records with the NCDAC.
Records show Giddens was first convicted in 2014 of assault on a female; and of driving while impaired in both 2019 and 2021.
Giddens’ probation on the second DWI conviction was revoked two months later and he spent six months behind bars.
Records show Giddens was given a suspended sentence (no time frame) in December of 2023 when he was convicted on two counts of misdemeanor larceny and one count of unauthorized use of motor conveyance.
Dawkins appears to have no prior convictions in North Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
CORRECTION: This story has been updated to correct that Dawkins had pending traffic citations, not Giddens. 12:57 p.m. 3-27-25.
