WINSTON-SALEM — Much like she has all season, senior Ka’mora Watkins dominated her events at the Mid-South Conference championship meet.
Richmond Senior High School’s girls’ indoor track and field team competed in the MSC championships Friday at the JDL Fast Track. As a team, the Lady Raiders finished in third place with 70 points.
Winning the inaugural conference title was Pinecrest High School (104 points), followed by Hoke County High School (102 points). Pine Forest High School (9 points) rounded out the standings.
Watkins was a big part of recording those points as she won three individual event championships in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
Freshman Nahryah Covington recorded the Lady Raiders’ fourth and final individual championship in the 300-meter dash.
Competing in 14 events as a team, Richmond added four second-place results and one third-place finish.
Watkins recorded eight points for each of her three wins (24 total points) and set new personal records in the long jump (16 feet, 11 inches) and triple jump (35 feet, 4 inches). In the high jump, she cleared the bar at 4 feet, 6 inches to claim the title.
With her distance in the long jump, Watkins repeated as the conference champion in that event for the second straight season. Her mark this year was exactly one foot farther than last year.
Also recording a new personal record time in the 300-meter dash, Covington clocked in at 43.93 seconds to add eight points and clinch her first career conference championship.
All three of the Lady Raiders’ relay teams made the podium Friday, with the 4x200-meter and 4x800-meter teams placing second. The 4x400-meter team took third.
Covington, along with junior teammates Colbie Covington and Angelina Culbreth, and freshman runner Shamia Williams, were conference runner-ups with a season-best time of 1:49.36 in the 4x200 race.
Representing the Lady Raiders on the second-place 4x800-meter relay team with a season-best time of 11:55.56 were juniors Emely Valencia and Janet Morales, sophomore Jazlyn Garcia and freshman Star Delinois.
Taking third place with a final time of 4:58.56 in the 4x400-meter relay were juniors Ava Edwards and Kellie Fuentes Gomez, and sophomores Chrislynn Culley and Brittney Quick.
Securing Richmond’s other two second-place results were Williams in the long jump (16 feet, 7 inches) and junior Glenisha Thomas in the shot put (29 feet, 2.5 inches).
All of the Lady Raiders who finished first or second were named to the MSC All-Conference team.
The Lady Raiders will compete in another outdoor meet at Union Pines High School Saturday.
