Winter weather advisory issued, freezing rain in the forecast

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County — along with about two-thirds of North Carolina — is under a winter weather advisory until 10 a.m. Thursday.

The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, went into effect at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the forecast from NWS, Richmond, Anson and Scotland counties could see a light glaze of ice as rain turns to freezing rain — potentially leading to slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges.

Eariler forecasts had called for a slight chance of snow flurries.

Forecasters say the hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute.

The rain, which has been falling for much of the day, is expected to continue until around 1 a.m. before transitioning to a drizzle, with a sub-freezing overnight low of around 29 degrees, according to the forecast.

Richmond County Schools has already announced a two-hour delay for Thursday.
