ROCKINGHAM — A woman is facing a trafficking charge after allegedly being caught with heroin.
An arrest warrant, issued to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, alleges that 26-year-old Whitney Marie Smith, who has an address listed in Asheboro, was found in possession of 10.2 grams of heroin in “multiple clear plastic baggies” on July 16.
According to state statute, anyone caught with 4 or more grams of heroin can be charged with trafficking.
Smith is also accused of having multiple hypodermic needles.
Smith was arrested and charged with one felony count of trafficking in opium or heroin and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
She is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $100,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 30.
Online court records show Smith has a pending paraphernalia charge from April.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Smith was convicted of misdemeanor larceny in 2024.
Court records show Smith admitted to a misdemeanor probation violation and was found guilty of resisting a public officer in 2025.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
