HAMLET — Police have filed charges in a Halloween hit and run.

According to the Hamlet Police Department, the driver was identified as 46-year-old Kimberley Renata Gibson-Covington, from north of Hamlet.

Gibson-Covington is accused of hitting an adult female pedestrian on Marlboro Avenue (N.C. 177), between Hylan and Rollins avenues, around 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 and failing to stop.

Police say the arrest was made “through the dedicated efforts of our officers and the assistance of our community,” and help from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

“The Hamlet Police Department would like to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who assisted with this investigation,” reads a Nov. 5 post on the HPD Facebook page. “We are especially grateful to the members of our community who came forward and provided information that helped our officers identify and locate the suspect.

“This investigation is a great example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement and the community work together.”

Gibson-Covington was arrested Nov. 4 and charged with felony hit and run with injury, as well as having an expired registration card or tag. Court records show she was given a $25,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 19.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Gibson-Covington was convicted in 2024 of driving while impaired in Hoke County.

Court records show she also admitted to two misdemeanor probation violations in 2025.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
