Women Build and Habitat for Humanity: Making it Work

Posted

ROCKINGHAM - All Habitat for Humanity houses are built in pretty much the same fashion, a group of volunteers comes together with the Habitat construction staff and the future homeowner on the home site to construct a home.  As a matter of fact, on September 4th, construction will begin on another such home in Hamlet.

The twist on this home is that the majority of the construction will be performed by women.

Commonly called a “Women Build,” the “theme” of the build is women getting together to raise funds for the home and construct the home itself.  Promoted primarily through social media, the response has been overwhelming as many women in Richmond County have expressed the desire to be involved either in the events, construction, or both.

The committee for the Women Build has been meeting for several weeks to brainstorm ideas for fundraising for the construction of the home with many creative event ideas coming out of the meetings.

The first such event will be “Yoga at the Creek” held Saturday, June 2nd at Hitchcock Creek from 8 a.m. -12 p.m.  The schedule for the morning is:  8 a.m. coffee and donuts; 9 a.m. restorative yoga; 10 a.m. kid’s yoga; 11 a.m. flow yoga.  The classes will all be taught by Ashleigh Arey, a local yoga instructor.

Another event which will be new to Richmond County is a “womanless pageant.”   There will be different categories in which the contestants will compete to vie for the crown.  Contestants are currently being sought and those males with personality and the ability to draw a crowd to the event will be the ones that will be chosen to participate.  For more information or to be considered for a contestant spot, contact Christian Liles at (910) 997-5671.

More events, including a wine tasting at Christie’s Home and the Garden Gifts Store, are in the works as well. More information will be forthcoming as the date is set for it.

Anyone who would like to participate in the Women Build is encouraged to call the Aberdeen Habitat Office, (910) 295-1934.
