More world, series records broken at Rockingham Dragway

ROCKINGHAM — At least six new world records were set during two events earlier this season at Rockingham Dragway.

Carlos Sobrino ran an 8.43 at 159 mph during the inaugural Sick at the Rock in mid-April to claim the record for fastest naturally aspirated Coyote engine.

The record was set during a qualifying run for the Small Tire Pro Stock class in his Joker 2.OH Fox body Mustang.

Sobrino had previously set the record with a 9.48-second run at 137.7 mph, according to a 2017 Dragzine article.

Last month, Street Car Braggin Rights announced that five new world records, all in the quarter-mile, were set during its event at the Rock May 15-17:

  • Mac Brosnan - World's Quickest GTR - 6.35 at 228 mph
  • Tony Politano - World’s Fastest TKX - 8.66 at 156 mph
  • Jahaziel Arencibia - World’s Fastest BMW M340 - 8.45 at 166 mph
  • Jon Moore - World’s Fastest Crown Vic - 8.37 at 163 mph
  • Mike Sessa - World’s Fastest Cadillac CT5 Blackwing - 9.02 at 157 mph

Three series class records were broken last weekend when the Xtreme Dragbike Association returned to Rockingham for the first time in 11 years:

  • Rodney Williford - Orient Express Pro Street - 239.23 mph
  • Brandon Litten - DME Racing Real Street - 200.27 mph
  • Blake Chavis - ATV - 4.667 ET

"Six hundred and twenty world-class bikes and three world records made the Xtreme DragBike Association return to Rockingham one we won't soon forget," said Dan VanHorn, who co-owns the track with Al Gennarelli.

"Jason Miller notoriously runs a tight ship, and for our staff and facility to exceed his expectations, we couldn't be happier," VanHorn continued. "Three years of planning seemed excessive, but once we saw what the XDA brought to the table, we were all releived it was well throught out."

Citing Miller, VanHorn said the Superbike Showdown was the largest XDA event aside from its annual Bike Fest.

"We can't wait until next year," VanHorn said.

Earlier this year, at Battle for the Thrones, Christian Torres set a new world record for the X58 class — which includes Supras and BMWs with S58 and B58 motors — with a 68mm turbo clocking an elapsed time of 7.94 at 173 mph in the quarter-mile driving a 2020 Toyota Supra.

Several records were also broken at Battle for the Thrones in 2024.

Two records were set in April 2023 during the Outlaw Diesel Super Series at Rudy’s Spring Truck Jam and multiple AMRA records were set last October in the 33rd annual Jim McClure Top Fuel World Finals.
