HAMLET - If you are looking for a program for your children this summer that involves a variety of activities such as swimming, crafts, computers, skating, cooking, and field trips, just to name a few, as well as a nutritious breakfast and lunch, the Summer Adventure Program in Dobbins Heights may be the one for you!

The program will be held at the Dobbins Heights Community Center from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning Monday, June 11, and will continue through Friday, August 3. In observance of Independence Day, the program will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th. The Dobbins Heights Community Park and Pool will be utilized for many of the activities also.

Brenda David is the Career Advisor at the Richmond Community Support Center in Rockingham. She is working in conjunction with Camp Director Fitma Brown and Clearwater Counseling Services of Hamlet personnel Fred Christon, executive director and head of finance, and Joann Kirkley, director of operations.  Also involved are Pastor Linda Ross of Faith Assembly Outreach Ministries in Dobbins Heights and Councilwoman Angeline David of Dobbins Heights.  This group is working together to offer this program for the children of the town of Dobbins Heights and others in Richmond County as well.

Clearwaters Couseling Services, located at 34 West Main Street in the Patrick Building in Hamlet, is providing funding for the program to pay staff and cover other expenses. All funds received from registration fees will go directly back into the budget to pay for transportation for field trips, supplies, etc. Cost of the six-week camp is being assessed so it will be affordable for all. A limited number of scholarships are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Special consideration will be given to families with more than one child.

One of the objectives of this summer program is to provide a place in the community for school-aged children to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch, as they are during the regular school year. The Food Bank for Central and Eastern North Carolina will be providing meals for those attending the program. In addition to the children attending the summer program, meals will also be available for young people through the age of 18.  Faith Assembly Outreach Ministries at 148 Daniels Street in Dobbins Heights, which also offers a soup kitchen on Tuesday evenings and a food bank on Saturday mornings, has been providing this service for the young people of Dobbins Heights in the past.

Applications for the program are being distributed to area churches, Hamlet Public Library, Leath Memorial Library, and can also be picked up at the Dobbins Heights Town Hall.
