Robeson County felon accused of stealing gun in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — A Robeson County man is facing gun charges following a reported disturbance southwest of Rockingham.

Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home on Westfield Drive in response to “a disturbance” on May 2, according to a press release issued Friday.

Dispatchers reportedly told the enroute deputies that the suspect “had hooked up to the victim’s utility trailer and had also assaulted the victim and taken his handgun.”

One of the deputies reportedly spotted the suspect vehicle and stopped it. The driver was identified as 53-year-old Keith Oxendine of Pembroke.

Deputies didn’t find the gun in the vehicle, but found a revolver near the road close to where the truck was stopped, according to the sheriff’s office.

Oxendine reportedly admitted to deputies that he threw the firearm out of the window before being stopped.

He was arrested and charged with larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $100,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 16.

(Note: Without having the defendant’s birthdate, the RO could not confirm Oxendine’s pending charges or convictions. Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction appear to show three Keith Oxendines who are 53.)

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
