ROCKINGHAM — Six precincts in Richmond County will be open May 14 for a special second primary election for two state offices.

The N.C. State Board of Elections announced the primary on April 3 for lieutenant governor and state auditor.

The lieutenant governor race is between Hal Weatherman and Jim O’Neill; and the auditor contest is between Jack Clark and Dave Boliek.

Weatherman received 19.59% of the vote in the March 5 primary for lieutenant governor and O’Neil garnered 15.84%. The winner will go on to face Democrat Sen. Rachel Hunt, daughter of four-term former governor Jim Hunt, and Libertarian Dee Watson in November.

In the bid for auditor, less than 1,000 votes separated the two candidates in the initial primary. That winner will face Democrat Jessica Holmes and Libertarian Bob Drach.

There is also a primary run-off for the 13th Congressional District.

All registered Republicans and some unaffiliated voters — those “who either didn’t vote or voted the Republican ballot in the March 5 primary” — will be eligible to participate, according to SBOE:

Registered voters can find out if they are eligible through the State Board of Elections’ Voter Search tool. Simply type in your name to pull up your voter record, then scroll down to the ‘Your Sample Ballot’ section. If you’re eligible, a link to your sample ballot will appear next to the election date –’05/14/2024 SECOND PRIMARY.’

“We encourage all eligible voters to participate in the second primaries, which will help determine who will be the Republican nominees for several contests on the November 5 general election ballot,” Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections, said in an April 3 press release.

The Richmond County Board of Elections on Thursday revealed the six local temporary precincts for the primary:

  • Browder Park – for voters in the Rockingham 1 and 2
  • Hamlet First United Methodist Church – for voters in Marks Creek 1, Beaverdam 1 and 2
  • Hamlet First Presbyterian Church – for voters in Marks Creek 2, Wolfpit 1
  • Ellerbe First United Methodist Church – for voters in Mineral Springs 1 and 2, Blackjack 1 and Rockingham 3
  • Cordova Fire Department – for voters in Wolfpit 2, 3 and 4
  • Concord Church – for voters in Steeles 1 and 2

These precinct setups are for the second primary only, according to the BOE.
