SANFORD — The weather allowed the Richmond Senior High School girls’ golf team the opportunity to return to action Monday.

Following a pair of rainouts last week, the Lady Raiders and the other competing schools of the Sandhills Athletic Conference played in their second match of the season.

The nine-hole contest was played at Sanford Golf Club, which resulted in Richmond’s best overall score this fall.

As a team, the Lady Raiders’ top three golfers recorded a final score of 154. That was six shots lower than Richmond’s first outing, which placed them fifth out of six teams.

“Good scoring for us at Sanford Golf Club, which is the shortest course we play and made difficult with doglegs and small greens,” Parsons said. “Talley obviously was on her game, and hopefully this is the start of her really coming into her own on the course. She has all the talent in the world.

“Ella had consecutive pars during one stretch and her swing looked the best it has at any point of her career. She’s going to finish strong.

“Tess, Jacey and Bayden all improved from the first week and hit quality shots,” he continued. “As they play more, those scores will come down, too. All in all, a great match for us, and something we definitely can build upon before hosting Wednesday.”

For the second time in as many matches, freshman Talley Webb led Richmond on the scorecard. She shot a 46, which was four shots lower than her first outing.

The Lady Raiders’ next two qualifying scores were courtesy of seniors Ella Munn (50) and Tess Bryant (58). Munn took four fewer strokes and Bryant, a first-year golfer, lowered her final tally by five shots.

Both Webb and Munn were near the top 10 finishers, taking 11th and T-12th overall, respectively.

Also competing for the Lady Raiders were senior Jacey McRae (59) and freshman Bayden Bendell (59), whose overall score was four shots lower than last week.

Pinecrest High School won the match with a team score of 112 and was led by medalist Rachel Joyce shooting a one-over par 36.

Other scores included second-place Lee County (130), followed by Union Pines (141) and Scotland (149). Southern Lee High School’s scores were incomplete at the time of publication.

Richmond will host its lone home match of the season Wednesday, which is a make-up contest from last week.

Golfers will play nine holes at Foxfire Resort and Golf, teeing off at 3 p.m.
