ROCKINGHAM — Merrie Dawkins is looking for a few good men — and women.
Richmond Community Theatre this week is holding auditions for its spring production of “The Trip to Bountiful.”
“It’s a play that people honestly do not want to miss,” Dawkins said, adding that some who have looked at the script described it as “the most beautiful story they’ve ever heard.”
The story follows the main character, Carrie Watts, an older woman who lives with her son and daughter-in-law and wants to go back to her rural home in the fictional Bountiful, Texas.
According to Theatrical Index, the award-winning story, written by Horton Foote, premiered as a teleplay on NBC and on Broadway in 1953, with most of the same cast. Jo Anne Fleet won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
Foote later adapted the story for a film released in 1985. Star Geraldine Page won the Academy Award for Best Actress and was nominated for a Golden Globe in the same category. Foote was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay Based on Material From Another Medium.
The play was revived off-Broadway in 1995 and on Broadway in 2013, the latter earning Cicely Tyson a Best Actress Tony.
Auditions will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 and Thursday, March 2.
Dawkins is also looking for crew members for the production, especially those who can run lights or sound and help with set changes.
